Sorano is situated above a tufaceus rock, 378 metres above the sea level. The river Lente surrounds the town from three sides.

The landscape is made up of volcanic hills of southern Tuscany, which extend themselves from Mt. Amiata until the tufaceous flat lands of Viterbo and the Tuscan Maremma.
