TERRITORY
Roccalbegna

The first impression of this village is very exciting. The cliff has a fortress, which dominates the village and creates an ancient, medieval atmosphere. I have seen a picture of this village of Maremma and did not resist to go and see it. I have been visiting mostly Tuscany and have never seen an urban agglomeration concentrated under such a steep cliff.

The origin of Roccalbegna is certainly Etruscan. In the Albegna valley, numerous Etruscan graves have been excavated. Furthermore, plenty of local places' names are of Etruscan origin like Albegna, Cana, Valerona.
In the medieval age a powerful family of the Aldobrandeschi dominated the zone. In the second half of '200 the family Rocca di Albegna recognized the political authority of Siena. The castle, which was of great importance, firstly became the seat of the lord of the castle followed by a vicar nominated by Siena. At the end of '300 the castle felt into decadence. In 1455 the Sienese started the reinforcement of Aldobrandescan fortifications. The construction of the Cassero of Siena, which dominates the south of the village, dates back to this period. This time was distinguished by the village revival that in 1445 consisted of only 80 inhabitants. With the fall of the Republic of Siena, the castle and its territory became a part of Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In 1560 Cosimo I of the Medici donated the feud of Roccalbegna to the cardinal Antonio Sforza. In 1751, with the abolishment of the feud system, the village returned to be independent with its own jurisdiction. Afterwards it became a commune that until the year 1963 included the territory of Semproniano.

Roccalbegna is a singularly positioned village situated above the confluence of Marlancione torrent and Albegna. It leans on two cliffs, il Sasso (Stone) or Rocca (Rock) to the north and the Cassero of Siena to the south. Sasso is a cliff of app. 60 metres height and almost vertical. You can enjoy an incredible panorama from the top of the cliff, with the houses appearing at the foot of the rock.
