TERRITORY
Pitigliano

Pitigliano is situated 313 meters above the sea level, above a tufaceous promontory of impressive beauty delimitated by green valleys and rivers Lente and Meleta.

From the recent archaeological excavation results, Pitigliano was a seat of protohistorical allocations already during various phases of the Bronze Age (2000-1000 b.C.).
Subsequently it became the seat of an important Etruscan settlement of which several parts of walls and numerous necropolises have remained. The Etruscan name of Pitigliano is not known; it might be Statnes (or Staties), which during the Roman period became a Prefecture named Statonia.
The name of Pitigliano derives from the gens Petilia, an important Roman family that called different localities by its own name.
From 862 on, the dominion of the family Aldobrandeschi lasts until the end of the XIII century. In 1293, following the marriage of the last Aldobrandesca's heir, Anastasia with Romano Gentile Orsini, Pitigliano became a County of the Guelph family.
From the end of 1400, it became an important centre of Jews. In 1598 a Temple was built which still exists today.
In XVII sec. the County was taken over by the Medici and in the first half of '700 it became incorporated under the Grand Duchy of Tuscany under whose power it remained until the unification of Italy.

Worth seeing: Etruscan necropolises, the paleochristian temple, the Orsini fortress, the Cathedral, the Park of Orsini, the aqueduct of Medici, the Synagogue, the Ghetto, the Jewish cemetery, the church of St. Rocco and Vie Cave.

Museums: Civic archaeological museum, Open archaeological museum "Alberto Manzi", Museum of the Jewish culture, Museum of the Orsini Palace.
