Giglio Island
Giglio Castello
Giglio Castello shows a rare realty of modern people living in an ancient way. They leave the key in the door while they go out to do some shopping or just having a chat. In fact, the talkativeness is a feature of "castellano" and there is no doubt that its origin derives from Siena. Walking the streets can be compared to a trip in a time machine that brings you back to the past, while living the culture and knowledge of contemporary days. The cellars which became rustic living rooms of many ancient dwellings are pleasant places to meet friends for a snack or for a dinner. A place, where stories are told, songs are sung and all is accompanied by the sound of a guitar or an accordion.
Giglio Porto
This is the only berth of the island. The harbor welcomes the guests with the best postcard: although being a maneuvering zone, you can admire the bottom of the clean marine waters by looking out from the navy. Capable boatmen (sea taxi drivers) are always ready to take you to the beaches of
Cannelle,
Caldane,
Arenella,
Campese or any other coastal part.
After dinner, it is more than pleasant to enjoy a good ice cream while sitting on one of the numerous porches or going for a walk along the seaside to the piers' extremes.
Giglio Campese
The large Beach of Campese is the most important bathing zone of the island.
The rock and the
Torre Medicea (Medicea Tower) delimitate its border like two faithful guards.
The beach is exposed to the east north and west. During the summer it enjoys fresh breezes and it is never invaded by an unpleasant humidity.
When the sun goes down and the air is clean,
Elba,
Montecristo and
Corsica stand out against the background of a burning horizon.
