Capalbio
There are various findings ageing back to the ancient times of Etruscans and Romans found in the territory of
Capalbio.
The first official evidence dates back to 805.
Carlo Magno donated in a bull the
Castle of Capalbio to
Abbazia delle Tre Fontane. Afterwards the family of
Aldobrandeschi took over and thanks to their gentleman wars their power culminated in the XIII century.
In 1416 Capalbio was most definitely conquered by
Siena.
In 1555 the Spanish army allied with the family of Medici, after Porto Ercole and Orbetello, they conquered Capalbio in order to deliver it to
Cosimo dei Medici.
After that episode, the territory fell into decadence for two centuries. The handling over to the
Lorena signalled the beginning of the revival.
In 1765 under
Leopoldo I, Capalbio became united with
Manciano and in 1842 under
Leopoldo II, with
Orbetello.
The end of '800 is remembered not only for the reforms adopted by the Lorena, but also for the arrival of new phenomenons such as the land aggregation by one landowner (latifundism) and banditry with its famous
Domenico Tiburzi.
In 1952, the application of the land reform changed the face of the zone by attracting more inhabitants and directing them towards agriculture. In 1960 Capalbio regained its administrative autonomy.
Today Capalbio has become further developed and a tourist destination of great importance. This became possible also due to its medialization of the visitors.
In fact, there are many reasons for the love at first sight: the marvelous geographic position, the pure nature which takes us from the sweet hills and big green spaces down to the long beautiful beaches washed by a sea that is amazingly clean and free from any urban settlement (
circa 14 coastal kilometers running from Ansedonia to Lazio), the mild climate, the possibility of beautiful trips, horse riding, hunting, great medieval historic downtowns; all these make it an ideal place for vacation in every season of the year.
